Becoming a Youth Tenant Rep
As active, engaged members of our communities, youth are an integral part of a healthy community. Vibrant communities encourage and facilitate the involvement of youth in various aspects of the life of the community and their participation is valued.
Youth are increasingly taking their place as key participants within Toronto Community Housing. In the 2006 Tenant Elections, a record 11 youth were elected as Tenant Reprsentatives.
Supporting Young Tenant Representatives
Once young tenants are elected, it is important to support them.
Expectations of young Tenant Representatives
Young tenant reps have the same rights and responsibilities as other Tenant Representatives.
They must:
- Speak up on issues that affect tenants in their community, and advocate and work for positive change
- Have regular meetings in their buildings to listen to the issues that concern their constituents
- Follow the code of conduct which governs all tenant reps
- Attend council meetings regularly
- Not abuse their ‘power’ as elected tenant reps
